Cornerboard is a rigid L-shaped edge protector (usually made from compressed paperboard, sometimes plastic) that you place on the corners/edges of a pallet load to stop two ugly things from happening:

  1. Straps cutting/denting cartons

  2. Stretch wrap crushing corners

In warehouse-speak: cornerboard is the cheap little piece that keeps your pallets from showing up looking like they got jumped in the parking lot.

Let’s break it down the simple way — what it is, what it does, when to use it, and how to pick it.

What Cornerboard Does (The 4 Jobs It’s Built For)

Cornerboard is used to:

1) Spread strapping pressure

Straps are narrow. Corners are weak. Tight strap + weak corner = crush/dent.

Cornerboard spreads the strap force over a bigger area so cartons don’t collapse.

2) Stop straps from “cheese-wiring” into product

During transit, vibration makes straps rub and saw into edges.

Cornerboard gives the strap a smooth, wide surface to ride on.

3) Give tall pallets rigidity

Cornerboard acts like a “spine” on the edges of the load.

That reduces leaning/racking and helps loads stay square.

4) Protect corners from handling damage

Forklifts, dock plates, and shifting pallets love chewing corners.

Cornerboard takes the hit so your product doesn’t.

Cornerboard vs Corner Protector vs Edge Protector (Are They Different?)

People use these terms loosely. Here’s the practical difference:

  • Cornerboard usually means a longer L-shaped board that runs down the vertical edge (adds rigidity + spreads force).

  • Corner protectors are often shorter “caps” placed only where the strap touches.

  • Edge protectors is the umbrella term for both.

If you’re strapping palletized cartons and want fewer crushed corners, cornerboard is usually the better move than tiny caps — because length = load distribution.

When Should You Use Cornerboard?

Use it when any of these are true:

  • You strap pallets of cartons

  • You stretch wrap tight and corners crush

  • Your loads are tall or top-heavy

  • You ship LTL or long-haul (rougher handling)

  • You’ve had strap marks, dented corners, or damage claims

  • Product packaging needs to look clean on arrival

If straps are touching corners and you care about the outcome, cornerboard is the move.

What Cornerboard Is Made Of

Paperboard cornerboard (most common)

  • Compressed recycled paperboard

  • Strong, economical, and perfect for carton loads

Plastic cornerboard (heavy duty / reusable)

  • Better for moisture, heavy loads, or reuse programs

  • Higher upfront cost

Most operations shipping cartons use paperboard cornerboard all day and never look back.

How to Choose Cornerboard (Quick + Practical)

Cornerboard is selected by:

1) Length

Taller pallets usually need longer cornerboard to spread force across more cartons and reduce lean.

2) Thickness / strength

Higher strap tension + heavier loads = stronger board so it doesn’t fold.

3) Leg size (width of each side of the “L”)

Bigger legs give more surface area, which reduces pressure and denting.

4) Shipping environment

Local delivery is forgiving. LTL is not. Rougher shipping = go stronger.

Bottom Line

Cornerboard is an L-shaped edge protector used on pallet corners to prevent crushing and strap marks, protect edges from handling damage, and reinforce tall loads so they ship cleaner with fewer claims.
