Size your corner guards

Corner guards protect against strap cut-through and impact damage during transit. The right thickness and leg length depend mostly on load weight and how it's banded — steel strapping concentrates far more pressure at the corner than poly.

Rule-of-thumb sizing based on typical LTL/warehouse handling. Loads with unusual stacking pressure, automated strapping equipment, or export/ocean transit may need heavier gauge — confirm with a rep for anything outside standard ground shipping.

What actually drives the spec

Banding Pressure

Steel cuts, poly cinches

Steel strapping concentrates far more force at the corner than poly — it's the single biggest reason to size up a gauge, regardless of load weight.

Load Weight

More weight, more corner load

Heavier loads apply more strap tension and more compressive force at the corner during transit and stacking — thickness scales with weight for this reason.

Environment

Paperboard vs. plastic

Laminated paperboard guards perform well indoors but can soften with moisture. Outdoor, humid, or ocean-freight loads generally call for plastic (HDPE) guards instead.

Coverage Length

Full-height is standard

Guards are typically cut to the full load height so the strap bears on protected material top to bottom — running short leaves the strap exposed to cut through unprotected board.
